Raleigh on Alert, National Weather Service Warns of Severe Storms with Damaging Winds and Hail in Central NC

The National Weather Service out of Raleigh, NC has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for central North Carolina, warning residents about potential severe storms today. The Outlook specifically identifies a marginal risk of severe storms between the hours of 2 PM to 9 PM, with the main concerns being damaging wind gusts that could exceed 60 mph and hail, which could easily be an inch in diameter or greater.

The National Weather Service advises that scattered strong to even severe thunderstorms are expected to pop up again on Sunday, particularly in the afternoon through to the early evening hours. These tumultuous conditions are forecasted mainly along and south of a line from the Triad to the Triangle to Rocky Mount. As for spotters, they are to remain on high alert. “Weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions according to Standard Operating Procedures,” the hazardous weather statement mentions.

Shifting gears to the actual forecast, last updated early this morning, it seems that despite the looming threats, Raleigh will see mostly sunny skies today with a comfortable high near 79, although those scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to mix things up post-4 pm.
