Two people are facing charges in connection with a phone scam affecting people across Durham County.
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) said it’s seen a significant rise in complaints of a common scam in recent weeks.
Authorities said the scam involves an unsuspected person receiving a phone call saying they owe money to a company to the courts, or have a warrant for their arrest. The caller then instructs the person to go to the bank and withdraw cash, and purchase gift cards or buy bitcoin.
