Students seeking a deeper connection with their environment can now sign up for the Neighborhood Ecology Corps, an after school program in Raleigh that encourages middle and high school students to engage with the ecological and social fabric of their communities. According to the City of Raleigh’s announcement, the initiative aims to cultivate environmentally-literate citizens by combining education with hands-on experiences.
The program, which runs from September through May, will take place on one weekday every week, with occasional field trips on weekends and during school breaks. It’s an opportunity for young people to not only gain an understanding of ecology and environmental justice but to also build relationships and become comfortable in the natural world. In a statement obtained by the City of Raleigh, the program was lauded for its efforts to “deepen their understanding of the relationship between their community, ecology and environmental justice.”
Open to students entering grades 6-10, the Neighborhood Ecology Corps is focusing on a future where young individuals are both informed and responsible stewards of their environment.
