Apex teen charged with attempting to scam elderly Lee County woman out of $25,000: Deputies

SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — An Apex teenager was arrested Thursday in a computer scam that targeted an elderly woman in Lee County, deputies said.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, scammers falsely claiming to represent Microsoft contacted the woman on Wednesday and told her that her computer was locked. The scammers demanded money to “unlock” the computer, which the woman withdrew from her bank and gave to one of the suspects.

When the scammers attempted solicit more money from the woman the following day, according to the sheriff’s office, the woman’s bank and her family contacted law enforcement…
