October in Wake County brings more than just the changing leaves and cooler air. It’s also a time to pay special attention to our four-legged friends in need, as it marks both National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Pit Bull Appreciation Month. Wake County Animal Center is harnessing this occasion to encourage locals to consider expanding their families with pets who have been patiently waiting for more than two weeks, offering them for a nominal fee of $25. This initiative aims not just to find these dogs a home but also to challenge the stigmas that might unjustly surround breeds like pit bulls.
“When people come to meet our dogs, they’re often surprised by how gentle and affectionate shelter dogs can be,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters in a statement obtained by wake.gov. She shared sentiments that these dogs are not only playful and loyal but “endlessly loving.” The adoption process is simplified due to the fact that the animals often come already suited to quickly settle into new environments as they are socialized and vetted, Waters explained. Each successful placement serves to not to only relieve the shelter’s capacity constraints but also to bolster support for local animal care resources.
Statistics revealed by the Animal Center indicate a current roster including 109 dogs and three puppies, in addition to 26 cats and 12 kittens, all waiting for someone to call their own. There’s also an extended Foster network with 84 dogs and cats that are adoptable. Pets dispatched from the Wake County Animal Center come with vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and are microchipped, which is of financial advantage to adopters as it absolves them from a few hundred dollars in potential vet fees while presenting a pet with the invaluable gift of a forever home…
