Sallie B. Howard teacher killed in Sunday crash

Students and staff at Sallie B. Howard School of Arts and Science are mourning the loss of kindergarten teacher, 24-year-old Brijette Basden, who was struck and killed on the side of Interstate 40 early Sunday.

Durham police said Basden stopped her Ford Fusion on the left shoulder of westbound I-40 near Page Road to switch driving duties with her sister, Asrael Basden. Police said the car was partially in the roadway when both sisters, who were standing outside the vehicle, were hit by a westbound 2003 Toyota Camry. As the 2003 Camry veered to the right, it was struck on its left side by the right side of another car, a 2021 Toyota Camry, which had been traveling in the second lane from the left and attempted to veer to the left to avoid the 2003 Camry, police said.

Brijette Basden, who was in her first year of teaching at Sallie B. Howard, died at the scene. Her sister was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police…
