Wake County Family Shares Heartwarming Cat Adoption Story for National Cat Day

In recognition of National Cat Day, Alice Avery, Wake County’s External Communications Manager, shared her experience adopting a cat named Cheese. Alice, who lives in North Carolina, decided to adopt another cat after her previous cat, Luna, died in 2018. She waited until 2020, when her son Sam was three years old, before visiting the Wake County Animal Center.

Alice and her husband had chosen the name Cheese, inspired by a character from the TV show The Wire. During their visit to the shelter, Sam identified an orange tabby as the cat they should adopt. The family brought Cheese home, and she soon adjusted to her new environment.

Cheese and Sam have developed a close relationship over the past five years. Alice describes Cheese as having a strong personality and being well-suited to their household.
