Runaway tire bounces over median, kills oncoming driver on I-440 in Raleigh

A Raleigh man was charged with involuntary manslaughter after one person was killed in a crash on Interstate 440 in Raleigh Saturday morning.

Tyree Bryant McKinnie, 28, was also charged with driving without a license and expired registration. McKinnie has many charges of driving without a license since at least 2019, court records show. He is accused of killing Bernard Wanjohi Kamara, 55, police said Saturday evening.

Police responded to the crash at 6:55 a.m., and found Kamara dead inside his Toyota Rav4 up against the median barrier wall. Police said their on-scene investigation and evidence showed that the left front tire on McKinnie’s car, a Volkswagen Passat, came off when McKinnie began to cross over the Atlantic Avenue bridge…
