In response to news that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees from the Raleigh area were taken to the New Hanover County jail, Governor Josh Stein criticized the federal government’s handling of the matter.
“People deserve to be safe, and keeping people safe is a top priority, and if there are bad people who are here illegally, they should be identified, held accountable and deported,” Stein said Nov. 20 during a news conference following a roundtable discussion with area law enforcement leaders at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. “But what has happened this past week in North Carolina has not been that. It’s been the folks with Border Patrol just sweeping through cities, picking up random people off of sidewalks, pulling people down from roofs, landscapers from lawns. They’re just going around and picking people up. That does not make our community safer.”
North Carolina has become the target of a federal crackdown on illegal immigration as federal agents recently went to Charlotte, Durham and Raleigh, drawing protests in the process. The Department of Homeland Security said it launched “Operation Charlotte’s Web” to “target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to the Tar Heel State because they knew sanctuary politicians would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets,” USA TODAY reported…
