RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The estate of Darryl Williams, the man who died in custody with the Raleigh Police Department in 2023, has received news of a settlement worth nearly 1 million dollars to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit.
An official with the City of Raleigh confirmed that the Williams family, who runs his estate, will receive $975,000 divided into two parts — payments by the City of Raleigh and the City’s self-insured retention. The family filed the lawsuit with attorneys Benjamin Crump and Emancipate NC’s Jaylen Miller.
The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit after Wake County decided not to pursue charges against the officers, who the chief medical examiner said killed Williams while trying to arrest him.
