RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) — Children of disabled veterans are losing their scholarships, and military families are struggling to access care for children with special needs, according to the Senate Democratic Caucus.
The Senate Democratic Caucus said the lack of a state budget has resulted in cuts to scholarships for children of disabled veterans. In a recent hearing held by Senate Democrats on the lack of a state budget, Senator Val Applewhite, Air Force Veteran, relayed the story of one of her constituents, the daughter of a 100 percent disabled veteran.
“She met every requirement. She submitted everything on time. She earned this benefit through her father’s sacrifice. She had planned to attend UNC-Charlotte to study biology, and like many other veteran families, they built their financial plan around this scholarship,” said Senator Applewhite. “But because this legislature has failed to pass a budget, she has been denied. Not because she did anything wrong, but because we did.”…
