Raleigh’s Fire Station 3, a Beacon Since 1951, to Close in Wake of Modernization Push

It was a gathering tinged with nostalgia and anticipation as active and retired Raleigh firefighters showed up to bid farewell to a piece of local history—Fire Station 3—before its slated closure in early 2026. The oldest operating fire station in the City of Raleigh, opened in 1951, is about to be replaced as the department looks towards future needs.

Former Fire Captain Steve Wilson, who served at Station 3 during his 30-year career, shared his sentiments during the commemoration. “The thing about this place, it always felt like home. People here are like family,” Wilson told the City of Raleigh’s news publication. Yet, despite its sentimental value, the station’s physical limitations have become apparent. As the smallest and busiest station in the city, it has seen a lot of action, a fact Wilson can attest to: “I never got bored. I was always on the go!”…
