On Wednesday, December 17, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Raleigh Water staff were notified of a sanitary sewer overflow near 512 Lake Glad Rd., Wendell, NC. Upon arrival, utility responders identified an active overflow caused by an asset failure, specifically a leak in an active force main.
Responding staff took all reasonable and appropriate measures to stop the overflow and mitigate its impacts. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Division of Water Resources, has been notified of the incident.
The overflow was successfully eliminated at approximately 12:02 p.m. the same day. It is estimated that 28,800 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged. The majority of the discharge was contained through pump-and-haul operations, preventing the wastewater from reaching surface waters. Crews used hydraulic flush trucks to collect and contain the untreated wastewater.
