‘Completely preventable’: Raleigh man says warnings about accused killer were ignored years before teacher’s death

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Raleigh man says the murder of a local teacher could have been prevented if law enforcement had taken his warnings seriously years earlier.

Wesley Phillips tells CBS 17 he repeatedly reported disturbing and escalating behavior by Ryan Camacho, the man now charged with first-degree murder in the death of Zoe Welsh, but no meaningful steps were taken by authorities.

“He demonstrated lots and lots of behavior that were huge red flags prior to this,” he said. “Our experience was pretty traumatic with this person and caused us a lot of hardship over the course of a few years.”
