Wake Sheriff’s Office coping with growing population at detention center

Th e n Wa ke County Sheriff’s Office is planning an expansion of the county detention center as numbers at the facility continue to increase. “Our count fluctuates weekly,” the sheriff’s office said last week in a response to a question from the Wake Weekly about reported crowded conditions at the detention center. “We are continuing to work with all our partners including neighboring Sheriff’s Offices, Department of Adult Correction, the Wake County Court System, and the DA’s office. “The population count at our detention facilities remains a significant consideration for our office,” said Sheriff Willie Rowe. “Our mission is to manage a growing population while ensuring the safety of our community, staff, and those in our care. Those priorities underscore the need for the planned renovation of our detention annex building and the future expansion of the Wake County Detention Center. This project is expected to add hundreds of additional beds, along with updated infrastructure and enhanced security measures.
