Wake County Principal Dr. Mariah Walker named 2026 NC Principal of the Year

A Wake County principal has been named the state’s top school leader for 2026.

Dr. Mariah Walker of Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy was named the 2026 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year at a ceremony on Friday in Cary.

According to a news release, Walker, a longtime educator, has led the all-girls school to a 100% graduation rate over the past four years and strong academic growth. Wake County Schools leaders say she supports both students and staff while helping shape policy across the district.

“A mentor, advocate, and thought leader, (Dr. Walker) fosters collaboration among school leaders and walks alongside them as they grow in their practice,” Wake County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor shared in his recommendation. “Her broad experience gives her a grounded voice in shaping policy and strengthening systems that support both students and staff.”…
