RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — A 4-year-old Reno-area boy who battled liver cancer became Washoe County’s sheriff for a day on Wednesday, an event organized by the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Kai, who was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma at age three, spent the day at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office at 911 E Parr Blvd. He met Sheriff Darin Balaam and French Bulldog named Chance who is also the Chief Happiness Deputy, got his fingerprints and photo taken for a Sheriff ID card, explored a SWAT vehicle and viewed SWAT equipment, met K9 Maggie, rode in a patrol vehicle and talked on the radio with a dispatcher.
Sheriff describes partnership with cancer foundation
Balaam said the Sheriff’s Office has partnered with NNCCF for several years to give children who have battled cancer a day of recognition.
“Today, we are helping Kai, who is a cancer survivor and a warrior, have a sheriff for a day,” Balaam said. “So, this is something we’ve partnered with Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation for several years. And it’s our way of letting these tremendous, amazing warriors that have battled cancer… we are just making their day today.”…
