RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Reno is giving pedestrians a few extra seconds to step into some busy downtown crosswalks before drivers get a green light — a signal change city officials hope will make busy intersections safer for everyone.
The timing change is called a leading pedestrian interval, or LPI. It gives people walking a three- to seven-second head start before vehicles traveling in the same direction are allowed to move. That means pedestrians can be in the crosswalk and be seen before drivers begin turning right or left.
