WCSD says firearm found at Sparks elementary school

A firearm was found at a Sparks elementary school on Monday, the Washoe County School District confirmed to the RGJ today.

In an note sent to parents Monday, the district said only that a weapon was found and confiscated by administrators at Greenbrae Elementary School on Fourth Street in Sparks.

“There was not any threat to our school, no threats were made, and our campus did not need to be locked down or secured because school was out for the day,” Principal Josh Reddig wrote.

The district did not say how or where the weapon was found.

At the start of the school year, the district promoted its new gun-detecting dog, the only one in regional law enforcement.

During the 2021-22 school year, firearms were reported on school grounds 16 times, according to records obtained by the RGJ. Three were found at high schools, three at elementary schools and 10 at middle schools.

The Reno Gazette Journal has asked for similar data for this school year.
