Reno and South Lake Tahoe toppled decade-old heat records this week, but a cooler, wetter scene could be on the way.
Reno hit 68 degrees on Monday. The previous record for Jan. 29 was 65 degrees, set in 2014.
South Lake Tahoe hit 57 degrees Monday and also cleared a record of 54 degrees, set in 2014.
All that follows up Reno-Tahoe International Airport hitting 69 degrees on Sunday, toppling the record of 64 degrees set on Jan. 28, 2011.
Temperatures have been up to 20 degrees above typical seasonal temperatures, the National Weather Service said.
But the weather midweek is about to take a turn as a winter storm watch looms for the Sierra and some wet weather could be ahead for the valley.
Reno-Tahoe weather midweek
The winter storm moving into the region will carry stronger winds and heavy mountain snow, NWS said. Travel could become difficult in mountain passes by the end of the week.
By Wednesday afternoon, Reno could see rain with higher elevations getting snow and gusty ridge winds. Wind gusts up to 35 mph could hit the valley on Wednesday.
