The sport of girls wrestling is growing rapidly in Nevada, as evidenced by the large turnout at the state qualifier on Saturday.
One thing didn’t change from the first year to the second though, the Reed girls team is still the best in the North.
The Raiders won the team title with 165 points at the Northern Nevada girls wrestling qualifier on Saturday at Reed. The qualifier includes all classes in Northern Nevada. Fernley was second in the team standings (138 points); McQueen took third (118) and White Pine was fourth (105).
Reed also had three individual champions, including two seniors who will continue in the sport in college, Maria Aiono, winner at 185 pounds, who will go to Presbyterian in South Carolina to wrestle and Meredith Nash, champion at 132 pounds, who will go to Chadron in Nebraska.
Reed freshman Charley Timms won at 235 pounds by fall in the first round.
Aiono won the qualifier and the state tournament last year.
She said loves working every day to improve at wrestling, and said it can also be good for every day life, as far as persevering.
