Einstein Bros. Bagels back in business after snowstorm, asbestos delayed reopening for a year

Roughly a year after a snowstorm damaged Einstein Bros.’ roof and caused the eatery to shutter, the Reno bagel joint has reopened.

Einstein Bros. Bagels at 5050 Kietzke Lane closed on Jan. 3, 2023, after “heavy snow and water weight from the last couple of storms caused the leaks in the roof,” Einstein manager Gabe Washburn confirmed in an email to the RGJ at the time.

Washburn said the roof restoration process was estimated to take between six and eight weeks from the start of repairs.

But there were other safety concerns with the building, which caused Einstein Bros. to delay reopening for a year.

A Northern Nevada Public Health record from early March 2023 shows Einstein Bros. had to address an asbestos problem in the Kietzke Lane building before reopening to the public. Einstein Bros. had to replace insulation on a back wall and ceiling, reset plumbing and contend with several other issues before getting cleared to open.

The space, which once housed Krispy Kreme, became Einstein’s first location in Reno in 2010.
