Spanish Springs wins 5A-North Regional wrestling championship; Cougars will send 16 wrestlers to state

Spanish Springs continued to flex its muscles as the top wrestling program in the North, and a few newcomers showed they also could be forces in the coming years.

The Cougars won the team title on Saturday at Spanish Springs for the school’s 14th overall Class 5A-North Regional wrestling championship.

The Cougars finished with 303.5 points; McQueen was second with 223.5 and Carson was third with 189.5.

The Cougars will send 16 wrestlers to the state tournament on Friday at Bullhead City, Arizona. It will be the second most from Spanish Springs as the Cougars sent 17 to state last year.

“The kids wrestled great,” Spanish Springs coach Joe Imelli said. “Taking 16 to state. Team effort. Everybody’s points matter.”

The Cougars had six individual champions in Saturday’s Regional.

“We just want to be us and be us in a great manner,” Imelli said about state. The Cougars won state in 2018 and 2019.

Damonte Ranch senior Braelen Toles won the 5A-North Regional wrestling title at 175 pounds after finishing second the past two years.
