Dr. Majid Khan, from Reno, is a first-generation student at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med). He is studying for a medical degree (MD) and a doctorate in philosophy (PhD), making him one of three students in the MD-PhD Program at UNR Med. Majid believes that research is about more than just reading papers; it’s about answering important questions that can improve the medical field and patient care. He also understands the value of research in improving patient outcomes in hospitals.
Majid’s path to becoming a physician-scientist-surgeon started after a summer in the PathMaker Cancer Research Program at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. He has learned several important lessons along the way. He stresses the need to use free time wisely to avoid burnout and pursue personal interests. He also promotes collaboration with colleagues at all levels to share knowledge and innovation.
Majid believes in recognizing and celebrating the achievements of colleagues, which can foster a positive environment within the hospital. He suggests seeking guidance from a variety of sources, as valuable lessons and opportunities can come from unexpected places. He also encourages gaining a wide range of experiences to improve medical knowledge.
