Washoe DA: Sparks officers’ nonfatal shooting of woman found to be justified

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks has determined that Sparks Police’s nonfatal shooting of Ginger Krivac in December 2020 was justified and characterized it as an attempted “suicide by cop.”

The report says that around 11:30 p.m. Dec. 9, 2020, Sparks police received a 911 about a suspicious person. A woman in a blue Mazda sedan was reported to be waving a knife, cursing and yelling at people in the parking lot of Dotty’s Casino on Victorian Avenue in Sparks.

Police spotted the Mazda around 11:50 p.m. going 40 mph in a 25-mph zone eastbound on Victorian Avenue. When they tried to conduct a traffic stop, the driver sped up and headed north on Pyramid Highway.

At a light, Krivac got out of the car with what appeared to be an “AR-15 pistol” and yelled, “Come on, come on,” according to the report.

One of the officers drew his handgun and Krivac held the weapon on her shoulder and started running toward the officers, the report said. Officers fired multiple times, hitting Krivak in the chest, abdomen, thigh, arm and hand.
