2 years after UNR acquired Tahoe campus, just 7 new students enrolled

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Lake Tahoe campus received seven new students from its main campus this fall.

In Fall 2023, the first year the Tahoe campus was open to main campus students, UNR had zero new enrollments , even after extensive marketing efforts.

In addition to those seven UNR students, 32 “legacy students” who were attending Sierra Nevada University before UNR took over the school in 2022 are on campus.

The deal between UNR and SNU allowed a transfer of academic assets and operations, and required UNR to assume all the responsibility of ownership and operation costs. There was no other cost in the transfer.

The process of UNR’s acquisition of the university in Incline Village began in 2021 . The University Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the college, received the campus and $9 million in endowments and now leases it for $1 per year to UNR.

The campus came with nearly 170,000 square feet of facilities. Added together, the campus property, buildings, equipment and artwork were worth more than $27 million, according to Nevada System of Higher Education documents presented during the acquisition.
