The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a red flag warning for the southern Sierra Front and southern Mono County until 7 PM today due to poor overnight humidity recoveries and gusty southwest winds, which are expected to continue. Wind gusts have reached 35-45 mph in many areas, with some wind-prone regions experiencing gusts as high as 50-55 mph. Cooler temperatures and improved humidity levels are forecasted for this evening as a cold front approaches.
Today’s weather will be significantly impacted by an incoming storm system, bringing strong winds, cooler temperatures, and potential rain and snow showers across the region. Gusty conditions are expected throughout the afternoon, with wind gusts in the Sierra Ridge areas possibly reaching up to 80-90 mph. Rain is likely to begin this afternoon, especially along and north of I-80, transitioning to snow in higher elevations overnight as temperatures drop. Valleys will see lows ranging from the 30s to 40s, while higher elevations may drop into the 20s. A brief break in the stormy weather is anticipated midweek before another unsettled system arrives later in the week. Residents are advised to prepare for the windy conditions, particularly those planning outdoor activities or Halloween decorations.
