A winter weather system is poised to sweep through Northern Nevada, bringing mountain snow and valley rain starting this evening and lasting into Thursday. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Sierra Mountains, where forecasts predict 4 to 6 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. Rain showers will also increase at lower elevations as a cold front approaches, with gusts up to 80 mph expected over Sierra ridges.
Following this initial round of precipitation, another winter system is anticipated to impact the region Friday and Saturday, potentially bringing even heavier snowfall to the Sierra and rain to Western Nevada. As temperatures drop, a wintry mix may occur in foothill areas around Reno and Carson City. Residents are advised to prepare for travel disruptions due to these wintry conditions as the weekend approaches. By Sunday night, drier weather is expected to settle in, offering a brief respite from the storms.
