Washoe election board member removed after video dispute over removal of campaign signs

A member of a Washoe County election board was removed from the post after video taken last week showed her admitting she had taken Republican campaign signs.

Amy Powell represented Washoe on the county certification board. The three-person board certifies Washoe County Registrar of Voter audits of ballot-counting tests. It’s comprised of a representative each from the county, Reno and Sparks.

Powell also serves as deputy director for voter protection for the Nevada State Democratic Party.

Cliff Nellis recorded video of their interaction that was posted on the Auditing Reno 911 YouTube channel .

The registrar’s office said it learned of the video Monday morning as it was preparing to run pre-election tests to make sure tabulation machines are counting ballots accurately.

“For the sake of expediency and to not muddy the waters, they removed her from the certification board for this process,” county spokesperson Bethany Drysdale told the RGJ on Monday.

Powell was replaced with a county employee, she added.
