The price of eggs has skyrocketed — if eggs are even available — at some Reno grocers as avian flu continues to cause nationwide shortages.
The shelves have been empty for nearly three weeks at the Safeway at Damonte Ranch Town Center, according to employee Avi Weiss.
“It’s definitely been crazy, but I think (eggs) will be back soon,” Weiss told the RGJ on Tuesday.
But it’s not just Safeway that is experiencing extreme shortages. Target had but a single carton of a dozen eggs for $7.69 during a visit by the RGJ Tuesday. Smith’s, Raley’s, Scolari’s and Walmart’s shelves were less than half stocked.
Sprouts Farmers Market and Whole Foods Market had the healthiest supply of eggs, with some of the cheapest prices. Other stores known for affordable prices, like WinCo and Walmart, were among those charging the most, with a dozen eggs costing $7.42 at both grocers.
“Seven dollars used to be the most expensive (eggs),” said Aaron Bender, who was buying them at Raley’s on Tuesday. “Now it’s almost double that. It’s sad really.”
