Deadly crash on US-50 in Tahoe spurs debate over median barrier necessity

Carson City, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Following a deadly crash on U.S. 50 earlier this month, discussions have intensified regarding the potential safety benefits of installing a median barrier on the heavily traveled four-lane road connecting Carson City to Lake Tahoe.

The crash on March 20 involved a wrong-way driver, later arrested for DUI and vehicular homicide resulted in one death and three injuries, according to state troopers.

The absence of a median barrier on the stretch of road at the top of Spooner Summit has raised safety concerns. Cindy Addington from Savannah, Georgia expressed her worries, saying, “I think it’s more safety because people are looking (at Lake Tahoe)… It would be easy to veer off if you didn’t have one.”

Conversely, Matt Hoehnan from Seattle, Washington argued against the need for a barrier, stating, “I don’t think there needs to be a barricade. I was driving 10 miles over the speed limit probably and it seemed fine.”…
