Reno council opens the door to potential layoffs amid budget deficit

The Reno City Council unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday, July 23, to allow the city manager to implement the layoff process in any department as needed.

The resolution comes after the city laid off eight employees earlier this month because of a projected $25 million deficit in the general fund for the upcoming fiscal year. City Manager Jackie Bryant said six people were cut from development services, one from public works and one from auditing.

“I can’t promise that we won’t have more,” Bryant told the council. ”I really don’t know what the future holds. I didn’t think we would be here, but it’s just where we are.”…
