Woman sentenced to 3 years for killing 12-week-old puppy in Reno

RENO, Nev. — A woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing a 12-week-old puppy named Lily. Elvira Monroy, 29, will be eligible for parole after serving 15 months. Monroy previously pled guilty to the charge of willfully or maliciously torturing, maiming, mutilating, or killing a dog kept for companionship or pleasure, a category D felony in Nevada.

“The killing of this innocent 12-week-old puppy was heartbreaking and inexcusable,” said Chris Hicks, Washoe County District Attorney. “It’s hard to comprehend how anyone could inflict such cruelty on a defenseless animal. In Washoe County, we take these cases seriously because our community believes, as I do, that how we treat the most vulnerable – including animals – is a reflection of who we are. This prison sentence represents justice not just for this puppy, but for every person who believes in compassion and accountability. We will always stand up for those who cannot protect themselves.”

Monroy was arrested by Reno Police officers in July of last year after they responded to the home she shared with her boyfriend. The 48-year-old man told law enforcement that the couple had argued the night before and broken up. Officers learned that in the middle of the night, Monroy woke her now ex-boyfriend, claiming she had killed the puppy and disposed of it in their apartment dumpster. Initially, the man did not believe Monroy was capable of such violence. However, in the morning, he checked the dumpster and found the dog’s remains, prompting him to call the police…
