National fire preparedness level rises as wildfire activity intensifies across the country

RENO, Nev. — As wildfire activity intensifies across the country, the National Interagency Fire Center, based in Boise, has elevated the National Fire Preparedness Level from Level 3 to Level 4. This change allows fire officials to better monitor and communicate with local jurisdictions, allowing for additional resources during large-scale fire events.

Tina Boehle, Public Information Officer at the National Interagency Fire Center, explained the preparedness levels. “We ramp up and wrap down resources and our needs based on what we’re seeing out there in the field,” she said. The preparedness level ranges from 1 to 5, with Level 1 being the least severe, requiring minimal national support, and Level 5 indicating the need for extensive national and international resources.

Boehle noted, “It’s a threshold. And so at preparedness, level five, that’s when you see us starting to discuss maybe the need for military assistance or international assistance, which we actually saw back in 2024.”…
