On This Day in History: Nevada’s first successful silver mill opens in 1860

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The discovery of the Comstock Lode in northern Nevada not only helped shape the state’s future, but it also had a profound impact on America at large.

On this day in history — August 11, 1860 — the nation’s first successful silver mill began processing the precious metal in Silver City. Paul’s Pioneer Mill would soon be joined by more mills around the Comstock — all refining the ore pulled from the mineral-rich hills. The state’s first ironworks also called Silver City home.

By 1871, the city boasted eight mills producing stamps from 95 different mining operations. Eventually, richer lodes near Virginia City and Gold Hill would lure many businesses, workers, and residents away…
