Semi-trailer explosion in Rancho Haven caused by self-combusting oily rags

Self-combustible oily rags are to blame for a semi-truck explosion north of Reno on Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to an explosion involving a semi-trailer on the 400 block of Gymkhana Lane in Rancho Haven at about 1 p.m. on August 13. The homeowner reported hearing a noise resembling a cannon and discovered his semi-trailer, used for storing miscellaneous items, engulfed in flames.

Upon investigation, the Northern Nevada Consolidated Bomb Squad determined that the explosion was caused by self-combusting oily rags stored inside the trailer. The side of the trailer had separated from its frame, indicating a minor explosion had occurred…
