Increased bear activity being reported across northern Nevada

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – From the foothills of Reno, west of McCarran, down through Carson and into Douglas County, and in communities along Lake Tahoe, reports of bear activity have become a more common sight.

Officials from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) say the rise in encounters comes as bears search for easy meals to bulk up on before hibernation in late November.

While fruit trees are a big concern right now, garbage remains the number one attractant for increased bear activity. In Washoe County, Douglas County, and Carson City, local ordinances require residents to secure their garbage to keep bears and other wildlife safe, and violations can result in fines.
