The making of ‘Resilience: Voices of Basket Weaving in the Great Basin’

hen the team at the University of Nevada, Reno’s @One Digital Media and Technology Center—a hub that supports projects in virtual reality, film and digital storytelling—first began working on the Virtual Museum of Native American Basketry in 2019, they never imagined that it would lead to five years of filmmaking. Now, the film, Resilience: Voices of Basket Weaving in the Great Basin, will be featured in the Reno Tahoe International Art Show this weekend.

The idea for the film first emerged from the @One’s digital basketry gallery, where visitors could inspect digital scans of over 100 intricately designed baskets in VR. The collection was originally gathered by 20th century collector Lulu K. Huber and spanned more than 25 tribes in the Western states, with pieces woven between the 1840s and 1930s…
