Sparks Marina canal cleanup begins amid resident complaints

SPARKS, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — The city of Sparks has initiated a significant cleanup effort at the Sparks Marina canal, following complaints from residents about trash buildup and unpleasant odors in the area.

The city has contracted Gerhardt & Berry Construction to carry out the cleanup, which began today on the east side of the marina, in the canal. Crews are focusing on cleaning the canal and stormwater vaults, with the project expected to be completed by Friday, Oct. 3.

News 4-Fox 11 reported last month that residents are frustrated with how long the problem has persisted. Sparks resident, Jackie said, “We only come out back when we have to.” She added that the smell is so bad she keeps her windows shut. “I’ve gagged more than once just walking back out here and it very much smells like sewage.”

City of Sparks city engineer Ashley Elson explained last month that heavy rain in August flushed garbage into the water. “We had a couple heavy thunderstorms that flushed a fair amount of garbage from our storm drain collection system and unfortunately the marina is the receiving body for the storm drain.”…
