Reno homeowners can soon build accessory dwelling units after council’s final approval

Reno homeowners will soon be able to add small secondary homes — often called “granny flats” or “in-law quarters” — to their properties after a unanimous vote by the city council Wednesday.

The council’s decision marks the final approval of an ordinance allowing Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, on single-family home lots across the city.

City leaders say the move is aimed at easing Reno’s housing crunch through what’s known as “infill development” — gradually adding housing within existing neighborhoods instead of expanding farther out…
