Woman ‘almost died’ from ingesting Lake Tahoe water after sewage spill, family claims

CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. (News 4 & Fox 11) — A young woman ‘almost died’ after contracting E. coli from the waters of Lake Tahoe following a spill that sent 85,000 gallons of raw sewage into the lake, according to a claim filed against Placer County and other government entities.

The government tort claim, obtained by News 4-Fox 11 Monday, alleges that Lauren Helwig developed a rare condition called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, from which she ‘will not fully recover.’

Helwig, who was 22 at the time of the July 2024 incident, has racked up nearly $2 million in medical bills already and is still receiving treatment, according to the claim which was filed in July.

“Lauren’s recovery has been slow, and quite frankly, not guaranteed … Fortunately, due to being a college athlete, she is strong and a fighter and did survive,” Helwig’s attorneys wrote…
