Connecting Reno, Sparks & TRIC: A regional challenge with big plans ahead

Anyone who’s driven between Reno, Sparks, and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) knows the struggle — long commutes, congestion, and a growing demand for better connections between where people live and where they work.

According to Reno City Councilman and RTC Vice Chair Devon Reese, several major efforts are already in motion to improve regional mobility and keep pace with Northern Nevada’s rapid growth.

Widening I-80

Reese says the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is moving forward with plans to widen Interstate 80 from Vista Boulevard to USA Parkway, a major project aimed at easing traffic and improving safety along one of the region’s busiest corridors.

He notes the $250 million investment was made possible by a federal grant secured by Nevada’s U.S. Senators, but the project is still several years away from completion.

A new roadway connection

Closer to home, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) is studying the idea of a new roadway that would directly connect TRIC through Sparks. Reese says the concept will be discussed at an upcoming RTC meeting in December as part of long-term regional planning…
