RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — A quick change scam, also known as a short change scam, is causing significant losses for a family-run business in northern Nevada. Mark Miller, owner of five Rainbow Market convenience stores in Reno, revealed that his stores, he said, have been targeted 50 times since 2017, with a case in September and another in October. Miller explained the scam, after the suspect buys a small item with a big bill: “What they do is they put a $50 out, then they say they didn’t know that they paid with a $50, can I buy the $50 back?” He continued, “While you’re doing that I’m going to remove the $50 from the counter… and then he’s going to say ‘oh, my mistake, I’m so sorry… you’ve got $49, here’s another $50, can I get $100 from you?'” The quick talking and fast handling of money allows the scammer to make a $50 profit without the teller realizing it.
Miller said he hasn’t filed police reports for every incident because he said police don’t always respond. “Police have never come to respond,” he said. “We generally, we don’t get any reply to filing cases.”…
