The Reno Fire Department (RFD) will continue its annual Saibini Food Basket tradition on Saturday at 8 a.m. at Station 21, 2501 Mill St. Current and retired firefighters will assemble and deliver holiday food baskets to families in need, honoring the memory of former RFD firefighter Jana Maas, a dedicated supporter of the program, according to the City of Reno.
Reno Fire Chief David Cochran highlighted Jana Maas’s impact on the program, noting the department’s pride in honoring her legacy and the ongoing importance of supporting families in need. The department plans to distribute 150 food baskets this holiday season.
The tradition of the Saibini Food Baskets began in 1932, when firefighter Sam Saibini, recognizing the hardships of the Great Depression, rallied his colleagues across fire stations to provide Christmas dinners for struggling families.
