Family near Tahoe rescued as surging river surrounds home

A family was rescued over the weekend from a house surrounded by the surging South Yuba River, south of Donner Summit. The rescue happened on Sunday afternoon along the South Yuba River, the Truckee Fire Protection District said in a Facebook post. The family became trapped in their house after the river swelled amid “significant rainfall.”

The house, located near the Interstate 80 corridor at Hampshire Rocks Road, was surrounded by gushing water, a video from the California Highway Patrol shows. The clip shows rescuers sliding a young child in a car seat along a fire truck’s ladder to safety. CHP did not respond to SFGATE’s request for additional information.

In light of the water rescue, officials urged the public to remain cautious amid the powerful winter storm. ”Flood watch is in effect and please take it seriously,” CHP said.

The flooding, caused by the heavy rainfall, is most concerning in streams in Sierra, Plumas and Lassen counties and the Susan River, according to the National Weather Service.
