Chain controls are now in effect on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit as a powerful Christmas-week storm continues to pound the Sierra Nevada with heavy snow and strong winds.
According to California Highway Patrol Truckee, chain controls were implemented early Wednesday morning as conditions deteriorated overnight. As of 5:05 a.m. on Dec. 24, westbound I-80 is under R-2 restrictions from the Donner Lake Interchange to Rainbow, while eastbound traffic is restricted from Kingvale to Truckee.
