ICE holds at Carson City Jail draw attention ahead of Board of Supervisors meeting

A routine report on activity at the Carson City jail is heading to the Board of Supervisors this week, but one section is drawing extra attention: new numbers showing how often federal immigration officials were involved last year.

The report, required by state law every six months, outlines bookings, incidents and overall trends at the jail. Included in the latest update are statistics on Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, holds. According to the data, ICE placed holds on 34 people booked into the Carson City jail in 2025, a small portion of the jail’s overall intake.

An ICE hold means the federal agency has asked the jail to notify them before an inmate is released, allowing ICE to decide whether it wants to take custody. It does not mean local law enforcement made an immigration arrest, nor does it reflect ICE activity happening outside the jail…
