Reno High vandals sentenced Monday

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — Sentencing was handed down Monday for the seven former Reno High School students charged as adults in connection with last year’s vandalism, which authorities described as an apparent senior prank.

All seven defendants pleaded guilty. During the proceedings, the Washoe County District Attorney opposed allowing the students to collectively benefit from a diversion-style outcome and formally requested jail sentences for all of them, arguing the severity of the damage warranted incarceration. Despite that request, the judge issued a range of suspended sentences, probation, fines, and supervision instead of jail time.

For each defendant, the Washoe County District Attorney argued for a sentence of 364 days in jail, suspended upon placement on probation rather than diversion. The State also sought 100 hours of community service per count, meaning the three defendants collectively faced 300 hours. In addition, as a condition of probation, the State requested that May, Smith, and Shuff serve 10, and 20 days in jail, respectively.
