Monkeys shipped without exams, raising biosecurity fears in Reno lab incident

A Louisiana research facility has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture after transporting monkeys to Reno without valid health certificates, according to a newly released federal inspection report.

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service cited the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s New Iberia Research Center for shipping 34 long-tailed macaques to a laboratory in Reno on January 8, 2025, despite the animals being examined by a licensed veterinarian more than 10 days before transport — outside the window allowed under federal regulations.

Federal rules require nonhuman primates to be examined by a USDA-accredited veterinarian no more than 10 days before crossing state lines to help reduce the risk of disease transmission.
