Sparks Man Accused of Hit-And-Run Crash

A Sparks man who caused a crash and then drove away from the scene has been found guilty of Duty to Stop at Scene of an Accident Involving Death or Personal Injury. Kyle Van Ness (dob 5/15/87) ran a red light at the intersection of Prater and Vista Way in May of 2024, hitting another driver. Prior to the crash, multiple witnesses observed a driver, later identified as Van Ness, speeding down Vista and failing to maintain his lane.

After the collision, Van Ness drove away. A witness followed him and took photos of the car and license plate, allowing Sparks Police to pull the vehicle’s registration information, including the registered owner. SPD connected with Van Ness at his home following the crash and after additional investigation, he was arrested.

The victim of the crash is a veteran; she explained to police that she noticed the defendant’s car approaching her driver’s side, and braced for the impending impact, consistent with her training. As a result, she suffered bruising and a broken finger which required pins, surgery, and approximately 5 months of occupational therapy…
